The JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program "Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction"

19 December 2023 - 21 February 2024

Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) conducted a JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program "Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction" from 19 December 2023 to 21 February 2024, with the cooperation of JICA Kansai. Six government officials from six countries: Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, participated in this course, learning how to formulate and implement local disaster risk reduction (DRR) plans to promote DRR measures in each country.

It was conducted in a hybrid format, where participants attended online programs before coming to Japan for the in-person program. In the six-week program in Japan, the participants attended site visits and lectures in disaster-related organizations/facilities in Hyogo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kumamoto, and Hiroshima prefectures to learn about Japanese experiences and countermeasures of DRR. Furthermore, they exchanged information and opinions on each country's budget situation and inter-organizational cooperation to promote DRR. At the end of the course, they presented a draft local DRR plan, which they formulated through the programs.

GLIDE Steering Committee Meeting

7 December 2023 (Online)

On 7 December 2023, the GLIDE Steering Committee Meeting was held online with participation of 25 participants from 9 organizations. In the meeting, chaired by Prof. ONO Yuichi, we shared the recent updates of GLIDE as well as those from member organizations; CRED and UNDRR. Participants discussed over the activities for 2024 and confirmed their cooperation in the coming GLIDE development and application agenda.

JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program: Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction for the African Region JFY2023

5 December 2023 - 29 January 2024

The JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program "Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction for the African Region 2023" was conducted from 5 December 2023 to 29 January 2024, with the cooperation of JICA Kansai. It was conducted in a hybrid format, with both online and in-person programs in Japan, with attendance from 13 government officials from 12 countries: Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Cape Verde.

The course aims to assist participants to formulate and implement local DRR plans to promote disaster reduction measures in their country. The participants attended lectures, joined site visits and Town Watching activity. They also participated in exercises to formulate a draft local DRR plan. ADRC would like to express its sincerest gratitude to all the supporting organizations and universities for their cooperation in conducting the course.

Implementation of the Pilot Project on Utilization of the ICT for CBDRM in Malaysia: Review of the Activities

4-5 December 2023 (Malaysia)

On 4 and 5 December 2023, ADRC organized the review meetings with the target communities, and district and state governments to evaluate the simulation of ICT tools prepared for the pilot project for CBDRM that was held in October.

Most stakeholders responded very positively to the tools and agreed to work with us in the future, recognising that the tools have the potential to revolutionise disaster response and to enhance disaster management capacity at the local level.

The meeting to report the outcomes of the project to the ASEAN member states will be held in February or March 2024. We also plan to discuss on the next project with the stakeholders.
