Officials say almost all the deaths were in the southwest of the country. They also say the casualty toll and damage estimates are likely to rise as more reports from the affected areas come in. About 1,500 people have been left homeless by the rains.

Some 200 mm (8 inches) of rain has fallen over the past day in areas in the provinces, flooding 12,225 hectares (30,000 acres) of rice fields and damaging 552 houses, police and meteorological officials said.
