Thousands of flood victims in Nepal need urgent humanitarian assistance and protection from outbreaks of disease, according to a United Nations envoy. At least 50 people were killed last week in flash floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains in western Nepal.

Heavy monsoon rains have caused floods affecting 13 districts in the mid- and far-western regions of Nepal, particularly affecting the districts of Banke and Bardiya. Nearly 50 deaths have been reported and hundreds of people remain missing. 2006/08/29
Eight bodies were recovered from the mountain side village of Khaptad, 550 kilometers (345 miles) west of the Nepalese capital Katmandu, Brig. Gen. Dipak Gurung said Tuesday. The slide came down Sunday, destroying some 80 houses and leaving dozens missing.
