Outline From 21 to 25 January 2026, a persistent strong winter-type pressure pattern persisted over the vicinity of Japan, bringing heavy snowfall to the Sea of Japan side from northern to western Japan, and to inland areas from eastern to western Japan. Subsequently, snowfall continued mainly on the Sea of Japan side, and as of 2 February, Fire and Disaster Management Agency says harsh winter conditions and snow-related accidents over the last 14 days have left 27 people dead.
