ADRC study visit to the affected areas by Kumamoto Earthquakes

On 19 and 20 December 2016,ADRC together with Cabinet office organized a study visit to the affected areas by Kumamoto Earthquakes and visited Mashiki town, Aso bridge area and Kumamoto castle, thanks particularly to Kumamoto prefecture, Kumamoto City, Mashiki town and Kyushu Regional Development Bureau, MLIT.

Background:

In April, Kumamoto prefecture with a population of more than 1.7 million, located in southern Japan, was hit by earthquakes measuring a magnitude seven, the highest level, on the seismic intensity scale of the Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA. More than 100 people lost their lives in Kumamoto prefecture, and around 8,000 houses were totally destroyed in Kumamoto prefecture and Oita prefecture. Efforts for immediate recovery were undertaken by both national and relevant local governments, while many issues have been raised and discussed among DRR experts, based on the outcome of Sendai conference for better DRR towards the future, including those on effective support for the affected local governments, quality of life for evacuees, evacuation friendly to elderly and vulnerable population, DRR human resource development, recovery of cultural heritage and possibilities of BBB and creative reconstruction by tourism, and so on. The ADRC study visit to the affected areas by the earthquakes of Kumamoto, April 2016, was organized to facilitate member countries exchanging views by learning from each other to: - identify the damages and status of recovery from the earthquakes - share with member countries lessons learnt of the earthquakes, and -discuss the best mix of policies and measures towards BBB for Kumamoto by learning from the experiences in member countries

Participants:

Among ADRC member countries, 29 participants from 23 countries joined the study visits, together with those from academia and the private sector. Kumamoto prefecture, city of Kumamoto and Mashiki town collaborated to organize the visit and participated in the meetings and Hyogo prefecture also supported and joined the visits
