The aim of the course is to enable disaster management practitioners, or those who may have future disaster management responsibilities, to gain a broad and detailed understanding of disasters and the threats they pose as well as to acquire the specific competencies needed to manage them in order to reduce risk and effectively co-ordinate relief and recovery programmes.This one year course is in response to an international demand and the requirement is for a well-rounded degree that maintains a balance between theory and practice, pre and post disaster planning, `natural` and human-made disasters, fast and slow onset hazards and different levels of economic, social and technological development, and to prepare those students who wish to go on to develop their research capacity. The course is modular in form and the list of compulsory and optional topics covered by the course as Introduction to Hazards and Disasters, The Development of Study and Research Skills, Development of General Management Capabilities, Development of Specific Capabilities for Disaster Management, The Assessment & Management of Risk, Field Study Project, The Role of Information Technology in Disaster Management, and some elective modules such as The Management of Complex Emergencies, Building & Planning to Reduce Disaster Impact, The Management of Human-Made Disasters and Public Health Consequences of Disasters.
