Outline An earthquake hit northwest Algeria on Wednesday, 22 December 1999 at 18:37 hours local time. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, while the Swiss Seismological Service indicated 5.2 and the media reported 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was situated in the mountains of Tessala.The Ministry of Interior confirmed that 22 people died and 49 people were hospitalized. The media reported 175 people were injured.

5,000 families (approximately 25,000 persons) were affected by the earthquake.
1,500 families (approximately 7,500 persons) are living in tents.
3,000 houses were destroyed.
The Algerian Red Crescent reported that more than 100 social infrastructure facilities such as schools, health centers and administrative centers were destroyed.
