Massive waves triggered by a powerful earthquake temporarily covered several inhabited islands in the low-lying Maldives archipelago, south of India, according to the country's Foreign Minister Fathulla Jamil. At least three children were killed in the high waters on an island north of the capital, Male. However an accurate death toll has not been assessed because communications to the outlying islands have been cut off, Jamil said.

The President has proclaimed a State of Emergency, following the National Disaster caused by the tsunami that swept the Maldives early this morning. Under the powers vested in the President by Article 42 (b) of the Constitution, the President declared the State of Emergency to facilitate disaster relief effects, assess the damage caused by the tsunami and carry out further mitigation measures.

The President has formed a Ministerial Committee and a Taskforce to take the necessary steps following the national disaster caused by the tsunami that hit the Maldives around 9 in the morning, today. The Committee and Taskforce have been formed in order to facilitate ways to help those affected by this disaster, assess the damage caused by it, carry out further safety measures, and to aid the execution of any further emergency steps.

Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has pledged aid to the Maldives on a priority basis in the wake of the national disaster in the Maldives caused by the tsunami that struck the country this morning. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the tsunami has also caused damage to India causing nearly 1600 casualties. President Gayoom thanked the Indian Prime Minister for pledging assistance to the Maldives at this time of national tragedy. He said that relief efforts were continuing and that foreign assistance plays an important role in this regard.
