Police say at least 3,000 have died and a similar number are missing in the low-lying Andaman and Nicobar islands close to the quake's epicentre off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Tamil Nadu is the worst affected state of India with over 2,367 people killed as per the latest Government sources. At least 69 people were killed and 810 are missing after tidal waves wreaked havoc along the 1,000 km coastline of Andra Pradesh. In Andaman and Nicobar islands, the death toll has climbed to more than 3,000. In Kerala, the toll has risen to 131.

Tidal waves killed over a thousand people in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said on Sunday. Tamil Nadu was the "worst affected", with possibly over 800 people killed, Patil said after a meeting of the Crisis Management Group in New Delhi.
