Outline Mt. Mayon in Albay province, 330 km southeast of Manila, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, erupted on 24 February 2000. Since its first explosion in June last year, the volcano has been restive for eight months.
The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) had already declared an alert at Level 3 on a scale of five, meaning critical situation and a possible hazardous eruption within weeks. On 6 March, 14,114 families comprising 68,426 persons have been housed in 52 evacuation centres.

The number of evacuees has shrunk to 5,751 families. These comprise 27,849 people who are temporarily living in 24 evacuation centres. Agricultural damage, including the loss of farm animals, is estimated at PHP 89.9 million (approximately US Dollars 2.2 million).

The volcano was quiet early Wednesday, showing only light steaming activity after five days of near continual eruptions which displaced 83,000 people by official count.

One casualty has been reported so far. As of 27 February around 48,000 people have reportedly been evacuated, including those who had been evacuated before the eruption.
