Today, the United Nations and its partners launched a Flash Appeal to respond to the urgent and immediate needs of the communities severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami that hit coastal areas in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Maldives, as well as Myanmar, Seychelles, and Somalia, on 26 December 2004.

More than 1000 feared killed in Mullaitivu coastal villages.
Coastal villages of Koyilkudiyiruppu, Mullivaykal, Kallappadu, Silavaththai, Alampil, and Unnappuluvu in Mullaitivu district were severely hit by the tidal waves and the volunteers who entered the villages for rescue operations told TamilNet that more than 90% of residents in many of the villages have gone missing. Rescue workers said that more than 1000 people are dead in the villages along the Mullaitivu coast.

On 26 December 2004, a series of earthquakes occurred in the area of the western coast of Northern Sumatra, Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands. The two strongest earthquakes had the magnitude of 8.9 and 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquakes have caused tsunamis impacting several countries in the region.Preliminary data indicate more than 500 dead.
