Thirty houses were destroyed, 32 had major damage; and this resulted in 200 families becoming homeless. Damage was also reported to roads, which in the initial hours after the earthquake, rendered inaccessible the mountainous areas ; and severely hampered the rescue efforts.

At least four people, three of them children, were killed and 68 people were injured when an earthquake measuring 5.8 hit northeastern Algeria on Monday evening, a police spokesman said.
