    The Council of Ministers held an emergency meeting on Thursday 23 February, which was followed by a technical meeting, gathering all sectoral ministries and UN agencies representatives, under the chairmanship of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC). After these meetings, teams were dispatched to the affected areas to assess damages and casualties:

    An earthquake of a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Mozambique at 12:19 AM (local time) on Thursday 23 February 2006. According to the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program (USGS), the epicentre was located at approximately 530 km to the north of the capital, Maputo, and 220 km to the south-west of Beira, Sofala Province.

    The quake struck central Mozambique at midnight local time and was also felt in several neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe and South Africa. The two dead were a child and a sick person in the town of Espungabero in Manica province near the epicentre.
