An earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing five people and affecting six villages in the province of Paktika, a defence ministry official said.

Pakistan's Seismological Center in the city of Peshawar said two quakes were registered along the border area early Sunday. One was a magnitude-5.2 and hit just after midnight local time. The other, a magnitude-4.9 quake, struck at dawn.
