Helicopters and boats distributed food, water and medicines on Friday to hundreds of people stuck on rooftops in an Indian state after a storm caused severe flooding, officials said. Large areas of the southern coastal state of Andhra Pradesh were still inundated after the powerful Bay of Bengal storm crossed India's eastern coast on Monday, and they feared a spike in cases of malaria, diarrhoea and other diseases.

Heavy rains from two major low pressures pounded coastal areas of India and Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal since last weekend. Reportedly, at least 33 people have been killed in Southern India and 16 fishermen are thought to be dead in Bangladesh. The weather office in the Orissa state in India forecasts more rain for the province in the next 48 hours.

Nearly 400 people who had been listed as missing in a storm off the southern coast of India were found alive after they took shelter on rooftops, trucks and buses, officials said on Thursday. But there were still scores missing, and survivors in neighbouring Bangladesh, which was also hit by the storm in the Bay of Bengal on Monday, spoke of bodies floating in the sea.

At least 1,000 people were missing in southern India on Wednesday and hundreds of fishermen were unaccounted for in Bangladesh after a severe storm in the Bay of Bengal killed 50 people, officials said. Indian authorities said about 100,000 people were homeless after heavy rains this week caused flooding in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh state, with strong winds uprooting thousands of trees and electricity poles.

In Orissa state in eastern India, 11,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas. State Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal told the BBC that over 25,000 hectares of rice crop have been destroyed by the storm.

A severe storm has ripped through southern India, killing at least 34 people and leaving 50,000 homeless, officials said on Tuesday. Hundreds of trees and electricity poles were uprooted by strong winds and heavy overnight rains which triggered flooding in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh state. Most of the victims were either electrocuted or died in house collapses, officials said.
