Turkey:Earthquake:2000/06/06

Duration2000/06/06 An earthquake measuring 5.9 in magnitude hit central Turkey on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring dozens.

Kalafat said Turkish officials were concerned because of the possibility of strong aftershocks. Officials documented 25 aftershocks between 5:45 a.m., when the initial quake struck, and 11 a.m. The strongest of those measured 4.5 in magnitude.

Homes and buildings were damaged across Cankiri province as well as in Ankara. Schools were closed across the region, and emergency crews were surveying the damage and searching for victims.
Officials reported up to 90 percent of buildings in the town of Cubuk, outside Ankara, were cracked or damaged.
