There is a serious concern as to the health situation, due to the lack of pure water and the hygienic conditions. In Sambava (80 km from Anatalaha), 13 cases of cholera were reported.

Cyclone Hudah ravaged Madagascar earlier this week, killing 20 people and affecting 300,000. The average wind speed of the cyclone was 160 kilometres an hour, but the wind was confined to close to the centre of the storm.

A United Nations assessment team flew to the districts of Maroantsetra, Andapa and Antalaha. In the three districts, 308,000 people (of which 61,600 children under five) have been affected. Preliminary estimates put about 100,000 people in need of emergency assistance, including 13,000 children.

A third cyclone, "Hudah", hit Madagascar on the night of 2 April 2000, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the north-eastern part of the country, which is still suffering from the effects of cyclone "Gloria". The cyclone crossed near the northeastern town of Antalaha.
