Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface with the Help of Space Observation Systems

Agency on Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergency Situations, EMERCOM of Russia
Student will gain knowledge and practical experience in,
  • Principles of satellite rotation theory;
  • Principles of space monitoring system development;
  • Procedures of the Earth surface remote sensing (ESRS) by means of space devices;
  • Peculiarities of natural and technological emergency monitoring;
  • Use of visible, thermal and radio-wave radiation for ESRS;
  • Structure and main characteristics of ESRS by space apparatus (SA ESRS);
  • Methods of ESRS data transmission and reception;
  • ESRS data receiving tools;
  • ESRS data formats;
  • Procedures and software of SA ESRS data processing, including digital processing of multispectral space images and interpretation of criteria which contain warning of natural and technological emergencies, state of areas (infrastructure, transport systems, agricultural fields, soils and vegetation, ecology etc.);
  • Methods of SA ESRS data identification in the area maps; geographical information systems;
  • Forest fire signs, methods of their identification, principal points of forest firepropagation theory;
  • Flood signs, procedures for assessing flooded area, boundaries and water levels, methods of flood forecast;
  • Procedures for forecasting hazardous atmospheric anomalies resulting in heavy shower flooding, hails, hurricanes and tornadoes;
  • Procedures for assessing expected losses taking into account the emergency area and its possible development;
  • Analysis of interpreted space images and rules regulating how the data should be reported to decision-making officials.
After completing the training course students gain knowledge and experience in:
  • Preliminary processing of images received by ESRS space devices;
  • Thematic analysis of SA ESRS data;
  • Usage of GIS technologies and software for processing the images obtained in different radiation spectra ranges;
  • Usage of software "ERDAS IMAGlNE" "Arc View" for space images processing;
  • As operator of satellite data receiving stations
