EM 106 Mitigation
operated by
Center for the Study of Emergency Management
Mitigation Six modules are included: Introduction, Hazard Analysis, Mitigation Strategies and Measures, Mitigation, Development and Capacity, Case Study and Exercise. Introduction surveys the development of mitigation concepts, the use of cost/benefit analysis, how different governmental units have approached the reduction of vulnerability and the building of capacity, multi-hazard functional planning and examples that demonstrate mitigation concepts. Hazard Analysis will discuss methods for determining and classifying hazards or threats in a variety of jurisdictions, inventories of communities and approaches for assessing threat priorities. Mitigation Strategies and Measures presents governmental and community steps that can be taken to reduce vulnerability within jurisdictions. A comparison of long-term development and disaster mitigation is discussed in Mitigation, Development and Capacity; "capacity" is explored as a community's ability both to meet disaster and recover from it. A Case Study in mitigation seeks to engage participants in analyzing an actual process. Finally, an Exercise sets up participants as consulting teams to critique a mitigation project.
