The nature of public safety resources within the United States, covering both fire and police, will be surveyed. Statistics that define the mix of volunteerism and paid employees, and how these resources could be deployed in emergencies, will be assessed and explained. The organization of public safety agencies and departments, their command structures, and their relationships to other jurisdictions will also be described.
