The United Nations Disaster Management Team sent three teams to the affected areas in order to assist civil protection teams comprised of district authorities, NGOs, and representatives from the private sector in assessment and data collection.

On 8 March 2000, the United Nations launched an Inter-Agency Appeal for Emergency Relief for USD 3,160,799 to assist 96,000 persons (out of 500,000 affected persons), in great need. Among these, it is estimated that some 20,000 persons have been displaced living in camps/schools or accommodated by friends and relatives.

The Government has now appealed for a total of 21.2 million US$ emergency assistance to meet humanitarian needs in the form of food, shelter, potable water, clothing and emergency medical supplies.
