On 8 March 2000, the United Nations launched an Inter-Agency Appeal for Emergency Relief for USD 3,160,799 to assist 96,000 persons (out of 500,000 affected persons), in great need. Among these, it is estimated that some 20,000 persons have been displaced living in camps/schools or accommodated by friends and relatives.
