A magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred in Sanriku Oki, off the east coast of Honshu, Japan at 2:46 pm (JST) or 05:46 (UTC) on March 11, 2011. The historic earthquake, followed by huge tsunamis and a number of aftershocks, caused devastation in the Tohoku region by leaving more than 18,000 people killed or missing.
